Do you dread doing laundry as much as I do? It doesn’t seem to ever end, and every time I walk into my laundry room, somehow the hamper is full again. I swore I emptied it yesterday, but yet again, it’s overflowing. My laundry room is basically a storage unit. Everything is out in plain sight, and there is zero functional storage. It’s pretty awful. I’ve been plotting my next move for renovations, and our laundry room might just be next on the list. It doubles as the access to our backyard, so I’ve been going back and forth on relocating it to the garage. But, will that be annoying? Having to walk outside every time I need to do laundry, which as previously discussed, is pretty much daily. However, if we keep it inside the house where it is, every single inch of space needs to be utilized for maximum functionality. I’ve been scouring Pinterest lately gathering ideas, and I think I’ve narrowed it down to the top 10 elements you need for a beautiful and functional laundry room. Read on below.

1. ADD A STATEMENT WALL

Whether it be wallpaper, textured tile, or a graphic mural, creating a statement wall can instantly take your laundry room from boring to beautiful.

2. CREATE CLEVER STORAGE

No one wants to walk into a laundry room (like mine currently) and see your ugly bottles of detergent, dryer sheets, and bleach chilling on your washer, or your dirty clothes pouring out of a hamper on the floor. Add some upper cabinets and lower cupboards to create clever and hidden storage solutions, like this built in hamper below.

3. CREATE A COUNTERTOP WORKSPACE

If you’re going to have a side by side washer and dryer, there’s nothing I love more than a butcher block counter. It gives you a nice big open work space for folding clothes or whatever you need. Plus adding a natural element, like wood, helps the space feel less industrial. You could even add in a small work sink.

4. FLOATING SHELVES

Adding floating shelves will keep the space open and airy. They also give you an excuse to add some beautiful decor items like plants or beautiful canisters. Or if you’re limited on space, you can also store necessities like detergent and dryer sheets in stylish bins or containers.

5. CREATE HANGING STORAGE

There’s certain functions you just need in a laundry room, like a space to hang up wet clothes to dry. This is a must. So why not make it pretty? I love the brass rail in the room below.

6. MAKE A STATEMENT ON THE FLOOR

I love the simplicity of a monochromatic laundry room, it makes it feel clean and fresh, which is what you want in a laundry room. But adding a geometric statement floor like these cement tiles from Three Birds Renovations, will instantly elevate the space.

7. GO STACKABLE

Stackable washer and dryers are such a huge space saver! Do a full built in, and hide them inside a tall cupboard, so when you’re not loading or unloading, they’re perfectly out of sight.

8. PLANT SOMETHING

Nothing brings a space to life, better than real living things! Adding some green in your laundry room will give it a fresh energy, and make it more inviting.

9. FINISHING TOUCHES

Elevate any space by investing in good hardware and fixtures. If you’re adding a sink, install a beautiful brass faucet, and coordinate with modern hardware on the cabinets and drawers.

10. CONTAINER SWAP OUT

I’m a huge fan always of swapping out a container. For example, my Tide Pods don’t need to be in the container they came in. Why not transfer them to a beautiful ceramic canister. Or if you have a sink, pour the hand soap into a lovely amber glass dispenser. A brush for getting stains out could be replaced by a natural brissel wood brush, that when displayed adds style to your space instead of unattractive clutter.

BONUS: A DOG ZONE

Let’s face it, no one wants to share their shower with the dogs. One day I’ll have a a space big enough to install a little dog bath as chic as this one below. Until then, I’ll just look at these adorable pups.
