Home is where the heart is – even if you left a tiny bit of it behind in that ritzy hotel room on your recent vacation. Hotel rooms, however small, exude a sense of luxury, both in visual and spatial terms, as they employ plenty of creative ways that add a sense of space, while making the room look super stylish. However, you need not sigh wistfully – with a few of these tricks, you should be able to replicate much the same experience in your own space-challenged bedroom. From using neutral colours to layering your lights to introducing a rug or a mirror, these design hacks will help you transform your sleeping space into a luxuriously spacious haven.

1. Use a neutral colour palette
You’d have noticed that most hotel rooms are furnished in neutral palettes, and with good reason too. Pale neutrals help enhance space as they reflect light, thereby illuminating both the room and your mood.

Tip: Layering different tones of the same colour all through the room, is a look that is very chic. At the same time, this type of variation creates a sense of coherence, making the space in a small room feel more open.

2. Don’t exclude dark neutrals
Paradoxically, small spaces can benefit from dark and warm neutrals too, which look rich and give depth and the illusion of expanse to a small room. The gradations of chocolate and beige shown here are rich neutrals that are gorgeous on their own; and the silk sheet and soft wool throw emphasise even more the feeling of casual, effortless luxury.

Tip: Dark on dark works well, but adding a good amount of lighter colours from the same family will balance the look and keep a dark room from looking too dark.

3. Indulge in a luxurious headboard
An eye-catching bedhead will not only make your bed a more comfortable space but will also grab the viewer’s eye. When you create a focal point in a small space, you take attention away from the closeness of the room to the element that adds depth and personality; in this case, a fabulous tufted fabric headboard.

4. Get yourself a bedroom bench
Bedroom benches and ottomans are wonderfully versatile and a great style addition. From doubling as storage for linen to being used as a coffee table to providing additional seating in bedrooms, a bench is a must, especially when free space is a luxury. Bonus points if the bench matches the headboard.

5. Trick them with mirrors
A time-tested and long-standing trick is the use of mirrors to create the illusion of space. Great for small spaces, a mirrored wall will virtually double the space. If you don’t like the idea of having a wall-to-wall mirror in your bedroom, why not install one on the top half of the wall, just above your headboard, instead? The antique finish here adds to the glam factor.

6. Raise ‘em high
Hang your drapes all the way from ceiling to floor – not from just above the door or window frame. If your ceiling is higher than usual, suspend the curtains from at least 8-12 inches above the frame. Tall curtains, with their clean, uninterrupted fall, look sophisticated – and they are especially great for small spaces, as they draw the eye upwards and away from the closeness of the room.

7. Suspend a stunning chandelier
A luxurious light fixture suspended from the ceiling does more than just add a touch of glamour. It provides a point to focus interest and adds an extra layer to the room’s height, thus making it look bigger.

Tip: Large, elaborate chandeliers work better in small spaces with high ceilings as they balance the dimensions of the room.

8. Layer your lighting
Instead of a lone source of light in the middle of the ceiling, create layers of lighting, using several smaller lamps around the room. Apart from creating a luxurious and romantic space, this draws the eye around the room, exaggerating the sense of space. The warm light emanating from the table lamps and alcove lights in this image adds a softer touch to the otherwise masculine lines and colours of the bedroom.

9. Lay down a plush rug
Bedrooms are all about comfort and indulgence, so you might want to choose a luxurious soft carpet for the flooring. Shaggy or deep-pile rugs in light colours have a dual advantage – they reflect light and they draw attention to themselves and away from the obvious smallness of the room, both of which help to make the room feel bigger.

Tip: If you already have a flat-weave rug, layer a smaller, fluffier rug right on top for extra comfort.

10. Install large-scale wall art
Just because your bedroom is small doesn’t mean it cannot be dramatic. One way is by hanging up an oversized piece of art that can inject a good dose of drama to a space-constrained room and make it appear bigger than it is. The larger the canvas or framed art, the more high-end the room will feel. Large artwork creates a gallery look which appears expensive.

On a parting note, I can’t help but point out this bedroom, which has got it right in all aspects – be it the full-length classy drapes, sleek upholstered headboard, tufted bench, fabulous lighting or the thick pile rug – all of it and more, yet the result is one of understated, elegant luxury.
