    Thanks!

      hi Shelagh,

If it says not to preheat, it will take just an additional 5-7 more minutes to cook these in the air fryer.
      Hope that helps.

Once you've washed your spuds you need to dry them thoroughly. If you don't then excess moisture can seep into your potato while it's being cooked and result in a soggy skin.

Why won t my potatoes cook in the air fryer? ›

If you're consistently stumped with why your potatoes aren't crisping up, there's a good chance that you're overfilling your air fryer. There's a reason people say “less is more”. Overfilling your air fryer can stop the air from circulating properly and can cause the potatoes to cook unevenly.

How long does it take for a potato to get soft in the air fryer? ›

Preheat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Rub potatoes with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley. Place potatoes in the air fryer basket. Cook in the preheated air fryer until potatoes are soft, 40 to 50 minutes, depending on potato size.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

The main reasons to cut the potatoes and pre-soak in water are: To allow the excess starches and sugars to be removed from the outer surface of the fry strips AND to keep the potatoes from browning prematurely from exposure to air. Covering in water helps the potato from turning a dark color.

Are potatoes better in the oven or air fryer? ›

Crisper skin: The skin of the air fryer baked potato became considerably crispier. I also noticed that the skin stayed crisp longer than the oven-baked potato. Fluffier interior: The interior of the air fryer baked potato was fluffier and lighter.

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

Why are my air fryer potato chips not crispy? ›

To ensure your chips are crispy, be sure to completely dry your potatoes before you start cooking. Also, make sure you rinse them long enough for crispy air fryer potato chips.

Why no foil in air fryer? ›

Air fryers work by circulating hot air, which originates at the bottom of the fryer. Lining it with foil can constrict the air flow and your food won't cook properly. If you are going to use aluminum foil in an air fryer, use a small amount in the bottom of the basket, making sure not to cover the food.

Why no spray oil in air fryer? ›

Never Use Nonstick Spray

Spraying the basket in the air fryer with nonstick spray can damage the air fryer's nonstick coating and can make the pan unsafe for use. If you need to use a cooking spray, like when cooking breaded food items like chicken tenders, only spray the food directly before turning on the air fryer.

Then place your potatoes in the basket of your air fryer, making sure they are in a single layer, and cook them for ~10 minutes. Pull your basket out and give it a shake or a stir, then cook them again for ~10 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden and crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside.

Why are people getting rid of air fryers? ›

Summary. In conclusion, while air fryers offer certain benefits such as reduced calorie intake and faster cooking times, they are not without their limitations. Size constraints, limited cooking options, and concerns about crispiness are driving some people to look for alternatives.

Is it better to soak potatoes before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

Do you need to boil potatoes before putting them in the air fryer? ›

They're fine, especially if you really don't have any time to prepare. But by boiling the potatoes first, you get the best texture for roast potatoes. They even seem to taste more potatoey. The way the heat in an air fryer distributes and really surrounds each potato with the hot air means that they go super crispy.

What is the purpose of soaking potatoes in water? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

Why do restaurants soak potatoes before frying? ›

The soaking, Mr. Nasr said, is the secret to the crisp texture of the fries. It draws out the starch, making them more rigid and less likely to stick together. The cooks fry them twice, first blanching them until slightly limp in peanut oil heated to 325 degrees, and again in 375-degree oil to crisp and brown them.

Why do soaking potatoes make them crispier? ›

Soaking the sliced potatoes in water helps to draw out some of the starch from the middle of the potato, resulting in a sturdier, crispier French fry.

How long can potatoes soak in water before frying? ›

Just a quick 15-30 minute soak in water does the trick if you're in a rush, though if you are planning ahead you can let the sliced russets or yes, even sweet potatoes, bathe for hours or even overnight before draining, drying, and frying them up.
