Anna prepares another Chicken Casserole on the occasion of the daughter’s birthday and brings it to her grave. She saw Neil and Emma there who were at the cemetery for Lisa’s funeral. She gave the casserole to them. Two episodes later we see Emma smashing the same casserole on Anna’s head in a bid to kill her.

Spoiler alert- In order to save herself, Anna picked up a broken piece of the casserole and stabs Emma with it. In a nutshell, it can be interpreted that the nine-year-old Emma was the killer all along who was just hiding in plain sight.

That’s how a simple Chicken Casserole dish is woven into the story and even helps Anna protect herself from getting killed.
