Tighten and Moisturize Your Skin Naturally

While commercial anti-aging skin creams may initially improve the look and firmness of your skin, this is often achieved through the use of unnatural chemicals that can have a range of nasty side effects, such as hormone disruption and even cancer. (1)

Luckily, there are several natural, plant-based ingredients that not only offer similar skin-tightening and anti-aging effects as commercial creams, but also nourish your skin rather than filling it with toxins. But even with a natural moisturizer, make sure to avoid these common mistakes when moisturizing to prevent the skin from aging.

Let’s take a look at some of these ingredients that you’ll find in this DIY moisturizer.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is a fatty, creamy substance hailing from the nuts of the West African shea tree. While you may have heard shea butter is great for preventing stretch marks during pregnancy, it turns out this rich butter is also excellent for firming and soothing the appearance of the skin on your face.

Studies show that shea butter can even aid in boosting collagen production. (2, 3). This is essential when it comes to tightening the appearance of your skin, since skin is composed of collagen that can diminish and break down as you age.

In addition, shea has also been shown to be more effective than mineral oil at preventing water loss in the skin. This is important, since moisturized skin maintains a more supple look and is less prone to cracking due to dryness. (4)

Aloe Vera

The emerald, spiny leaves of the aloe vera plant have been used for centuries to treat various skin disorders. The healing benefits of aloe vera extends beyond just helping to improve conditions: it has also been shown to be excellent at maintaining the appearance a youthful complexion.

Studies show that the aloe plant contains an abundance of helpful, protecting antioxidants and vitamins. (5) When you look at this from an anti-aging perspective, aloe vera seems to be a winner for helping to tighten the appearance skin, as it actually helps keep skin supported and strong. (6)

Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil hails from the rosa canina rose bush. Unlike standard rose oil that is obtained from rose petals, rosehip oil comes from the pressed fruit and seeds of the rose plant.

Studies show rosehip oil is an excellent moisturizer for the skin, and contains potent antioxidants that help prevent the appearance of wrinkles and aging (hello firm, supple skin!). One study in particular found that in just eight weeks of applying topical rosehip oil, participants showed statistically significant improvements in the appearance of crow’s-feet wrinkles and skin moisture. (7)

In addition, rosehip oil has beneficial long-term effects that help protect your skin from aging and sagging. Studies show it protects against environmental factors (such as sunlight exposure) that break down your cell membranes and damage DNA. This is important when it comes to maintaining youthful skin, since this damage manifests on your skin as wrinkles and other signs of aging. (8)

Rosehip oil is also similar to shea butter and aloe vera in that it has been shown to promote collagen synthesis and restoration – perfect if you also suffer from breakouts or redness and sensitivity. (9)

I love this, but I am wondering why one couldn’t use the shortcut of just using warm shea butter and stirring into it a pure high-quality cold-pressed aloe gel, and the rosehip oil. Would there be any difference in efficacy?
