Have you heard of the Hygge style trend yet? It’s been a pretty popular buzz word lately. Hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”) is a Danish term defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” There have been at least a dozen books written on the art of hygge-ness, including The Year of Living Danishly and The Little Book of Hygge. This “cozy” craze has been going strong for at least a year and doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon. And why should it? Any trend that glorifies the art of comfort and contentment is a style I’d like to stick around for a long time. Can I get an amen?
Most of the time, though, coziness in decor is something that most people only think of when decorating for fall and winter. But Hygge isn’t only for cold weather. Hygge is a year-round style and there are plenty of ways to Hygge your home during the summer. Here are a few of my favorites:

Lighten Your Linens
Switch out your bedding for white or light fabrics. Think cotton or linen in whites, grays and blues. I love how comfortable and soft this bed looks. It definitely screams “Hygge.”
Use Natural Elements
Decorate your space with summery natural elements. I love the white lantern, the light basket tray and the bowl of driftwood in this space.
Take Advantage of Natural Light
Open those blinds and let the sun pour in! Summer allows for the longest days in the year so take advantage of the glorious natural light while we have the chance.
Feature Fresh Flowers
There is nothing more beautiful and welcoming than an arrangement of fresh flowers in a home. Put them anywhere and everywhere!
Capitalize on Outdoor Living
Summer time is the best time to relax with friends on your patio. Hygge the space with fluffy pillows and a pitcher of pink lemonade.
Have a Backyard Picnic
There’s not much more Hygge than a summer picnic, complete with a soft blanket, pillows and a bottle of rosé.
Decorate with Fresh Fruit
Take advantage of all the fresh fruit that’s available in the summer by displaying it in your kitchen. Keeping it out in the open on a gorgeous tray will also encourage you to eat more of it! Win-win!
Use More Candlelight
A cozy fire is the epitome of Hygge, but it can be way too hot for the summer. Instead, put a dozen or so candles (or a fireplace candelabra) in your fireplace and light them up. You’ll get that same cozy feeling without the heat!
Host a Dinner Party
Dinner with friends outside on a summer evening is oh so Hygge. Dress up your table with light linens and fresh flowers to set the stage for your feast.
Install a Hammock
If you’re lucky enough to have trees in your yard, string up a hammock and treat yourself to a nap! Don’t worry, if you don’t have trees, you can find hammocks with stands here. Doesn’t a hammock nap sound cozy?
Set Up a Reading Nook
My idea of a summer Hygge home wouldn’t be complete without a cozy reading nook. I love to read and I don’t often have time, but when I do, I love to curl up in my favorite chair and get lost in a good story (you can find a chair similar to this gorgeous piece here).
I don’t know about you, but I am ready to full-on embrace all things Hygge. I’m literally ordering The Year of Living Danishly right now. Cozy and comfortable is exactly what I need to bring into my home this summer!
