An Easy Delicious Dinner

I was dying to make these Maid Rite Inspired Sandwiches, or loose meat sandwiches, after I first heard about them from the classic tv show, Roseanne.

These ground beef and onion sandwiches are unbelievably simple but so delicious in their simplicity. Served with pickles and mustard or ketchup, they are absolutely addicting when served on a soft, sesame seed bun.

This is a quick and easy dinner, alongside with a salad or a veggies.

The Key Is Great Ground Beef

I recently visited a Pig Farm and shared the experience on my social media page and spoke about how much I enjoy visiting and supporting small family farms.

I have been involved in the Midwest Agricultural community for a few years due to my work with the Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers Association. The grit and passion in the agricultural community is something I really admire.

After seeing my social media posts, another farmer reached out to me from a family farm in Louisiana called LaMay Family Farms.

LaMay offers high quality, farm raised natural beef. They asked to send me some beef to try and I was more than glad to accept.

I used their ground beef in this recipe and let me tell you, before I even seasoned this beef it was absolutely deliciously flavorful and fresh tasting.

If you would like to read more about this farm and ordering for yourself, they ship all over the Continental US, so check out their site. CLICK HERE. You can also follow them on Facebook.

LaMay sent me the meat for free, but this is not a paid sponsorship, all opinions are my own.

The beef is such a major part of the recipe since there are so few ingredients and I was really happy to have such good quality beef for this recipe.

Soup Is Good Food

I used a can of French Onion Soup for this recipe, though this is not a traditional ingredient in Maid Rite Sandwiches.

The soup adds a more cohesive texture to the beef crumbles and I like the flavor of the caramelized onion in this soup. This helps offset the more raw texture of the onions in this recipe though you can leave this soup out if you prefer.

What Are Maid Rite Sandwices?

Maid Rite Sandwiches are also known as loose meat sandwiches or Tavern Sandwiches.

I am not an expert on Maid Rite sandwiches. I learned about them from watching the old Tv Sitcom, Roseanne.

What I do know from the internet is: In 1926, the Maid-Rite sandwich was born!

Fred Angell started the concept in Muscatine, Iowa. Angell franchised the idea, selling the rights throughout Iowa in the coming years.

He worked diligently to get the right combination of meat and a selected blend of spices.

When a deliveryman tasted Fred’s new creation, he said, “This sandwich is made right.”

With that, the Maid-Rite was born. To me, it is like a sloppy joe without the sauce. I love the savory simplicity and this is why the beef is so important.

Big Batch and Into the Slow Cooker

These Maid Rite Inspired Sandwiches are perfect for making a big batch and keeping it warm in the slow cooker.

They’re perfect for tailgating or game day grub. These would also freeze really well.

I would think this is a perfect meal to bring a new mom or someone who is struggling to cook for themself for some reason, like grief, cause it’s very easy to heat up and eat.

I first heard about Maid Rite, or Loose Meat sandwiches from the classic tv show, Roseanne. These ground beef and onion sandwiches are unbelievable simple but so delicious in their simplicity. Served with pickles and mustard and or ketchup they are absolutely addicting when served on a soft, sesame seed bun. This is a quick and easy dinner, served with a salad or a veggies.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds of lean ground beef
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 1 can of Campbell's French Onion Soup (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Lawry's or other seasoning salt (adjust to preferences)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon of soy sauce or Worcestershire
  • Pinch of Sweet Paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon of dill pickle juice
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 6 to 8 sesame seed buns
  • sliced dill or bread and butter pickles
  • Mustard of your choice
  • Ketchup

Instructions

  1. Add your butter to a skillet, then add your onions. You do NOT want to cook these onions until they are super soft. There should still be some crunch to them when you serve these sandwiches. I cook them for about 7 minutes in the butter alone, just to take the bite out of them. After 7 minutes, add the ground beef.
  2. Cook the ground beef, breaking it up into a fine crumble. I use my ground meat chopper. When the meat is fully cooked, if you want to drain it, you can. I use the lean beef so I do not need to drain it. After you drain, add the seasonings, the soy sauce or Worcestershire, and the pickle juice. Sauté for a minute or so then add the can of soup if you are using it. The soup adds a little texture to the beef and is not a traditional ingredient, I liked how it mellowed out the rawish onion and kind of brought the beef together. If you add the soup, simmer for 10 minutes on low until the mixture thickens up and absorbs. If you do not use the soup. You are done.
  3. Steam your buns in a steamer on the stove or you can microwave for a few seconds wrapped in a damp paper towel. You can also put the buns on top of the beef face down, cover the pan with a lid and let them steam for a few minutes.
  4. Serve with mustard and ketchup and slices of pickle, or just plain!
