Most Popular Wine In Australia (Red & White) (2024)

May 08, 2023

Australia has a thriving wine industry and culture, but have you ever stopped to think about what the most popular wine in Australia is?

Australia grows more than 100 different wine grape varieties, but there is a certain style (for red and white wine) which is more more popular than others.

Can you guess which is the most popular?

Most Popular Red Wine In Australia

In Australia, the most popular red wine varietal is Shirazwhich accounts for 45% of red wine variety (433,305 tonnes of 959,131 tonnes).

A little bit about Shiraz and why it is so popular.

  • Shiraz grows in almost all wine regions of Australia and accounts for 25% of total wine production. It is also the most exported wine style and one for which Australia has become well known for on the world stage.
  • As a red wine it is bright, bold and full of personality.
  • Australia has some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, some of which were planted in the early 1800's in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.
  • Shiraz is a robust wine style and winemakers create some which are perfect for everyday enjoyment while others are made to be high end fine wines.
  • Depending where the grapes are grown the style of Shiraz will vary. For example, warmer climate wine regions like the Barossa, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale will generally produce bolder and fuller flavoured Shiraz styles. In comparision, cooler regions such as the Adelaide Hills, the Grampians and Mount Barker will usually create lighter and softer Shiraz wines.

Most Popular White Wine In Australia

In Australia, the most popular white wine varietal is Chardonnaywhich accounts for 46% of white wine variety (358,007 tonnes of 775,129 tonnes).

A little bit about Chardonnay and why it is so popular.

  • Chardonnay is Australia’s most planted white variety, first planted in the 1830's, and currently accounts for about half of white wine production in the country.
  • Similar to Shiraz it is grown all over Australia and used to make a large range of wine styles.
  • Overall there are three main types of Australian Chardonnay; unoaked which is fresh and vibrant, oaked which is full-flavoured and creamy and sparkling which is lighter and bubbly.
  • Chardonnay trends have changed overtime. In the 1980's and 1990's Australian Chardonnay was typically big and oaky while these days they are more likely to be lighter and brighter.
  • These lighter versions will usually come from cooler-climate wine regions like the Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and Yarra Valley. More full-flavoured styles are typically from warmer areas like Margaret River and the Hunter Valley.
