National Martini Day

Described by writer H. L. Mencken as “the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet”, the martini has been a classic for almost 100 years. In order to celebrate this timeless drink, June 19th is recognized each year as National Martini Day. Whether this is your go-to drink at a bar or you’re a fan of mixing up martinis at home, raise a glass (or two or three) this June 19th in honor of National Martini Day!

History of the Martini

While the exact history of the martini is somewhat unclear, there’s no doubt that this co*cktail has been a favorite for a long time. One theory suggests that the name originated from a brand of vermouth while another theory speculates that the name is a shortened version of a popular drink known as the Martinez, served in San Francisco in the 1860s. As time progressed, the co*cktail has seen many variations and additions. Martinis typically come in a few different classic forms with the most standard recipe, known as a dry martini, being two parts dry gin and one part dry vermouth. Wet martinis contain more vermouth and dirty martinis often have a splash of olive juice and an olive for garnishing.

Make Your Own Martini

Crafting up a martini is one of the easiest mixed alcoholic beverages to make. With only a few ingredients, you can whip this classy drink up in no time. In this recipe, we trade gin for vodka and garnish it with olives.
