Vetri Maaran���s Visaaranai is not the first Tamil film that has made it to the Oscars. A C Tirulokchandar���S Deiva Magan (1969), Mani Ratnam���s Nayakan (1987) and Anjali (1990), Bharathan���s Thevar Magan (1992), PC Sreeram���s Kuruthipunal (1995), Shankar���s Indian (1996) and Jeans (1998) and Kamal Hasan���s Hey Ram (2000) were officially selected in the past for the Academy Awards. However, none of these films managed to bag the Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category.
Visaaranai, which has been selected as the official entry to Oscars 2017 in the Foreign Language Film category is the first Tamil film to win the Amnesty International Award at the 72nd Venice Film Festival.
The film has also bagged the Best Feature Film in Tamil, Best Supporting Actor for Samuthirakani and Best Editing for Kishore in the 63rd National Awards. The story revolves around police brutality and corruption.
