Not a lot of lunch options can compare to the creamy, savory taste of a properly packaged egg salad sandwich. Whether you're opting to follow the traditional recipe or spicing this dish up with crunchy ingredients such as potato chips, egg salad sandwiches remain one of the easiest dishes to prepare for an on-the-go meal. But if left alone for too long, the bread of this popular sandwich can quickly turn into an unappetizing mush, leading many home cooks to avoid traveling with it. Luckily, using lettuce in your egg salad sandwich can make the difference between a delicious meal and a soggy mess.
To keep the texture of your egg salad sandwich intact, place two large (and dry) pieces of lettuce between the filling and the bread. The leaves will create a barrier that will keep your bread from soaking up the moisture of your egg salad filling, ensuring a dry and appetizing texture for longer periods of time. The lettuce will also add a nice color contrast to your meal, as well as hints of leafy greens that pair excellently with the richness of the eggs and mayonnaise in the middle.

If you don't want to rely solely on the lettuce hack to keep your egg salad sandwich from getting soggy or simply don't want any greens, try storing your filling in a container separate from the bread instead.
While certainly not as convenient for travel as a few pieces of lettuce, storing your egg salad in a separate, sealable container guarantees that your bread slices will remain crisp. This method works perfectly if you don't want to arrange your sandwich right away and plan to store your luxuriously soft egg salad in the fridge or a portable cooler. Parchment paper or aluminum foil are also great alternatives if you don't want to carry around extra Tupperware, but keep in mind that using these will result in more packaging you'll have to throw away when you're done with your meal.
Toast your bread to give your egg salad sandwich maximum crunchiness

If you have extra time on your hands, try to toast the slices of bread in your egg salad sandwich. The toasting will not only add a golden-brown color and caramelized flavors to your meal but also create a delicious exterior that will hinder wet ingredients from ruining your bread. This won't prevent soggy bread entirely, so you'll want to employ this trick in conjunction with the lettuce hack or keep your egg salad stored separately.
If you want to take the crispiness of your egg salad sandwich up a notch, you can also ditch the regular slices of white bread for a drier, artisan variant such as a baguette, ciabatta, or sourdough. Using these breads will give more volume and bite to your sandwich, especially if combined with toasting and the lettuce hack to prevent any mushing from happening. Just remember to let your bread cool if you're going to wrap it in parchment paper or aluminum foil, as condensation could easily wet and ruin its surface.
