Caffeine Awareness: Why is Robusta Coffee So Strong? (2024)

March is Caffeine Awareness Month! To celebrate, Nguyen Coffee Supply is unpacking the science behind caffeine andwhy Vietnamese robusta coffee is so strong. While many use this month to take stock of their caffeine intake (which we support), we’re using this month to shine a light on its benefits.

Caffeine is a chemical compound that acts as a stimulant on the central nervous system through the blockage of adenosine receptors, which cause drowsiness. As such, caffeine consumption keeps you awake andincreases activity in your brain and central nervous system. Physical effects of caffeine include increased alertness, increased heart rate, and immediate energization. Some experience perspiration as well though effects vary for every person.

Vietnamese coffee is strong because most of it is robusta coffee, which has nearlytwice the caffeine content of arabica coffee. This high caffeine content makes robusta a bold and powerful coffee, and gives Vietnamese coffee its reputation as very strong. Outside of thetraditional phin filter brew preparation that creates a low volume, strong cup of coffee, the caffeine content of Vietnamese coffee is inherently higher than most cups of coffee available.

As a chemical compound, caffeine comprises more of the robusta coffee bean at around 2.7%. Arabica coffee beans contain about 1.5% of caffeine. Due to this contrast in caffeine content, robusta coffee beans also impart adeeper, bolder flavor compared to arabica coffee.

The high caffeine content of robusta coffee makes it more naturally pest and disease resistant while allowing it to grow more widely as a naturally stronger coffee species.

Robusta coffee also has 60% less sugars and fats compared to arabica coffee, which adds to its strength of flavor and flavor notes of nuts and dark chocolate.

Ultimately, robusta coffee packs a punch when it comes to strength and caffeine content. With twice the caffeine content compared to standard cups of coffee. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that caffeine should be consumed according to one’s personal tolerance and preferences. With Vietnamese robusta coffee, you need half as much as you would normally consume to get the same amount of effects of caffeine which ultimately saves you money as well!
