Ham steaks make a perfect addition to breakfast alongside some cooked eggs, hashbrowns, and a tall glass of orange juice. Of course, dicing it up and adding it to a nice omelet or breakfast casserole is also a great idea for any leftovers!
What’s Great About Ham Steaks?
Ham steak is so versatile you can serve it in so many different ways and never get tired of it. Even cooking and serving it as is with your next holiday feast is a great idea!
Unlike larger chunks of ham that can take hours to cook, ham steak is incredibly quick and can be finished in just a few minutes! Depending on the type you buy your ham steak could be a simple slice off of a larger ham or it could be a processed log of ham.
Both are great for various reason- my favorite reasons for buying them is because they’re often on sale and cheap or because they cook quickly and I don’t have to worry about an entire ham’s worth of leftovers to work with.
Sometimes just buying a simple ham steak is a great way to cut costs and save a little stress in the kitchen. 😉 Of course, this ham steak recipe is completely stressed free and couldn’t be any easier!

How to Cook a Ham Steak FAQ
Is Ham Steak Already Cooked?
Ham steaks are not normally pre-cooked, but some are. The ham steaks that come in a large slice from the deli section are usually smoked but still technically raw meat.
The ham steaks that are logs of meat reconstituted from various parts of the ham are usually pre-cooked or smoked and no longer considered “raw” but should still be heated through before eating.
Check the packaging before cooking to ensure you’re using the right kind of ham steak for this recipe.
Does ham steak need to be cooked?
Ham steak is typically pre-cooked. Check this when you purchase it. You can eat it without cooking it, just as you would lunch meat.
How do you know when ham steak is cooked?
The ham steak is cooked when both sides are lightly browned and it is warmed through.
Why is ham steak tough?
Ham steak becomes tough when it is over cooked. Avoiding over cooking will make the ham steak tough.

How to Store Ham Steak
Ham steak can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week. It can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 4 months.
Can You Freeze Ham Steak?
Yes you can! Whether the ham steak is pre-cooked or not doesn’t matter, you can still freeze it just the same.
If you eventually plan on just using some steaks, and not all of them, then I recommend freezing them solid for about an hour on a baking sheet before transferring to a zipper topped freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Then you can just grab as many steaks as you need and don’t have to worry as much about pulling them apart!
What to Serve with Ham Steak
Ham steak goes amazingly well with a nice brown sugar glaze. Serve it along with a side of cooked vegetables and a heaping pile of mashed potatoes (or a scoop of cheesy scalloped potatoes and you really can’t go wrong!)
