[UPDATED] McDonald's Officially Serves Breakfast All Day—But There's a Huge Catch (2024)

UPDATE: October 7, 2015 at 11:12 a.m.

Just one day into its long-awaited all-day breakfast roll out, McDonald's is already getting flack for its limited offerings. While we already knew that the Golden Arches would be divided into two markets—one for biscuits and one for English muffins—what we didn't see coming was a caveat for the beloved hash browns.

With a flurry of angry tweets came news that the crispy, deliciously friedhash brown was not available at all locations yesterday. And this has us confused. Because whilethe fast-food chain stipulates that "menu items vary by location" but "deliciousness doesn't," hash browns were never noted as an optional offering. According to the McDonald's website, they are fully party of the all-day breakfast program:

But before you freak out and take to social media to express your rage, it's important to know that the brand hasresponsed. In a statement to Buzzfeed, McDonald's representatives said that only 10 percent of stores will not be offering hash browns after 10:30 a.m. So cross your fingers your local outpost is part of the majority.

If you've been biting at the chomp to order an EggMcMuffins andbiscuit sandwichesside-by-side in the afternoon, keep dreaming. McDonald's has officiallycrushed ourbreakfast dreams, announcing a disappointingcaveat to itsall-day breakfast menu:No locations will be serving both biscuit-basedand Englishmuffin sandwiches after 11 a.m. There can only be one breakfast sandwich style. If your location falls under the biscuit market, you can get buttery biscuit sandwiches packed with bacon, egg, and cheese or sausage and egg. If you're in the muffin market, you can order Egg McMuffins with sausage or egg andsausage.Wondering which umbrellayour local Mickey D's will fall under? Ask the franchisee owner. It's entirely up to each location, depending on customers' majority preferences. It isworth noting that both markets will serve hotcakes, yogurt parfaits, oatmeal, and hashbrownsat all hours.

UPDATE: September 1, 2015 at 5:40 p.m.

Get ready for all-day hotcakes because McDonald's is officially offering breakfast at all hours. The morning meals will be offered at all of the chain's U.S. locations—more than 14,300 of them!—beginning October 6. This is the company'sbiggest initiative in six years, and it's requiring some major menu changes. That means all-day options will be limited tothe brand'score options, like sausage burritos, hot cakes, biscuit sandwiches, and Egg McMuffins. And this makes sense: It simplifies things for each restaurant while bringing in more dough(breakfast currently accounts for more than a quarter of the company's sales). So go forth and make all the morningmash-ups your Mickey D's–loving heart desires.

According to the Wall Street Journal, McDonald's test of all-day breakfastat select California locations has gone so well that the company may start offering it nationwide in October. We still don't know if this brilliant idea will become a nationwide reality, but it got us thinking: What ingenious eats can be created by combining items from the breakfast and lunch menu? Lucky for you, we found out.

If our Instagram feeds are any indication, #putaneggonit burgers are a no-brainer. The perfectly round egg from an Egg McMuffin easily makes itself at home as a topping for the old-standby Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

Chicken 'n' waffles are a firmly established brunch tradition, so why wouldn't you hack together this dish with some classic Mickey D's hotcakes and chicken tenders? It just makes sense, people.

Taking inspiration from KFC's Double Down, we swapped out the top and bottom buns of a Big Mac with hash browns, and the middle bun with those can't-resist McDonald's french fries. Three levels of potato goodness? We're in.

This one might be a little out there, but stay with us: A crunchy Filet-O-Fish fits snugly under a warm, crumbly buttermilk biscuit. But then this sh*t gets real: We covered it in zesty barbecue sauce. Fishcuit perfection.

Our friends in the South should be familiar with hot chicken on a biscuit. We took a cue from that brunch favorite and used a Buffalo Ranch McChicken and a Sausage McGriddle — which let's not forget, is infused with syrup — to create what could be the most masterful breakfast combination of spicy, savory, and sweet ever. It might be too much.

Plus, don't miss all of McDonald's breakfast items ranked.

UPDATE: According to Burger Business, McDonald's will not be offering its full breakfast menu should breakfast all-day become a real thing. The testing sites for all-day breakfast are serving Egg McMuffins, Sausage McMuffins with Egg, Sausage Burritos, Sausage McMuffins, Hash Browns, Hotcakes, Hotcakes and Sausages, Fruit & Maple Oatmeal and Fruit 'N Yogurt Parfaits.

So that means no McGriddles or biscuits, but if you were really inspired by our mash-ups you can always order right before breakfast ends at 10:30, wait until the switch to lunch, and buy the rest of your meal — just like the cool kids at Delish did.
