Doretta attended Herrin High in Herrin, Illinois, and graduated from Springfield Southeast High School. She continued her education at Lincoln Land Community College and Sangamon State University (now The University of Illinois at Springfield) where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Management. Continuing her thirst for education, Doretta went on to obtain a Master of Science in Educational Psychology and Counseling from California State University in Northridge, CA. Doretta married her childhood sweetheart, William Joseph Crawford Sr., on December 23, 1970. They have six children: Gary Holman, Kerry (Crawford) King, William Joseph Crawford Jr., Domonique (Crawford) Miller, Raven Crawford, and Charmaine (Day) Buck.

Doretta worked as a student assistant under Farries H. Morrison during high school. He would become a lifelong mentor and friend. He recommended Doretta for her first full-time job with the State of Illinois, where she served as a tour guide in the Capitol Building. Doretta worked for various Illinois State Agencies in varying positions for 25 years. In 1994, she moved to California. There, she worked for the Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando Valley and the President’s Office at California State University, where she retired in December 2011. Doretta was a Girls Scout, a 4-H member, and a recipient of the Illinois State Scholarship. She was also a member of Peoples on Progress, founded by William Washington to address issues Black Citizens were forced to deal with in the 70s and 80s.
