Layered Textures

Layering multiple textures is an easy and on-trend way to bring your living room design current. "The rapidly growing trend of layered texture paired with a roaring organic modern movement will stay strong into 2024," says Sara Malek Barney of BANDD/DESIGN. "People’s need for tactile touch and the visual stimulation of multiple textures and patterns in a space, I think will continue to grow in popularity." Add a chunky throw to your couch and patterned pillows to your armchair, or you can opt for a mosaic rug. And if you’re feeling adventurous, opt for textured finishes and try layering various tones of the same color palette amongst your furnishings.

Wallpaper allows you to add some personality to your space that may not come through with just paint. "The resurgence of wallpaper will continue to gain momentum into 2024 and as people grow less fearful of commitment to a fun wall display," says Barney. The best part about this trend is that you can try out different colors and patterns, and then change your mind later.

Whimsical Forms

CJ Scott of Shine Bright Design predicts we'll be seeing more organic and whimsical forms this year, rather than geometric and hard lines. If you're not ready to fully commit to the trend, Scott recommends trying some accent pieces with wavy or curved lines first. "Play around with some different colors and patterns," Scott says. "Have your friends over for a paint night and just go crazy!" The curvy design trend has been slowly gaining popularity in all rooms of the house over the past few years (think curvy kitchen cabinets, rounded coffee tables, and circular rugs).

Jewel Tones

Bold new color schemes are replacing all-white everything. "Be it velvet, fringe, rich emerald greens, or vibrant fuchsia hues, I anticipate requests for deeply saturated and moody jewel-tone living room spaces this coming year," says Megan Hopp, founder and principal of Megan Hopp Design. "Gone are the days of all-white walls (thank goodness) and neutral everything. I am seeing more and more desire for luxe textures and patterns like burl wood and unlacquered brass, alongside a palette of classic jewel-tone colors."

Repurposed Vintage

More designers and homeowners are moving away from fast furniture and adopting the deliberate practice of searching for the perfect second-hand piece. "Vintage pieces add an authentic, warm feel and help your space to tell a unique story," says Lauren DeBello, owner and principal designer of Lauren DeBello Interiors. "I love to add a vintage stool or end table in a reading nook for a touch of patina."

Giving vintage pieces a second life, whether that’s with fresh paint or new upholstery, is also on the rise. "I am especially excited to recover as many vintage sofas and chairs as possible this calendar year with unexpected and bold textiles," says Hopp. "Clients are opting to mix old with new, not just in age, but in style. We've been mixing traditional furniture frames with fresh modern prints and even sometimes matching the drapes too—a fresh twist on a classic convention."

Dark, Moody Tones

Darker colors and textures are here to stay in 2024, another antidote to all-white interiors that surged in popularity throughout the last decade. "We're continuing to see rich, deep hues on walls, furniture, and textiles," says DeBello. "Think moody greens, rich browns, burgundies, etc. Neutrals are definitely still on trend, but these moody colors help to make a space feel cozy." Experiment with this trend by slowly incorporating richer colors in accessories like pillows and throws. This way, you don’t have to fully commit to a darker space.

Going hand-in-hand with the layered texture trend, furnishings are about to have a bit more character. "Incorporating these elements enables us to inject personality into a room, without going full maximalist," says Elizabeth Backup, founder of Backup Design. "While these features have been staples in certain parts of the country (and world) for ages, I see them making their mark on Southern California this year as we emerge from the white sofa trend."
