Valentine’s Day falls right in the heart of winter. During this time, skin, especially lips can easily get cracked and dried out. Being passionate about homemade skincare and conscious about what I use, I wanted a simple solution that uses all-natural ingredients. I also wanted to make lip balm without beeswax for those with sensitivities or choosing to live a more plant-based lifestyle. This led me to create a simple homemade lip balm recipe that’s beeswax-free, accessible, all-natural, and easy to make!

Why a Homemade Lip Balm without Beeswax?
With this homemade lip balm recipe, I was able to make a lip balm that soothes the skin and uses all-natural ingredients without Beeswax. I chose to make this lip balm without beeswax to account for sensitivities to beeswax and lifestyle choices, without sacrificing quality.
Instead of beeswax, I chose to use carnauba wax as a plant-based, beeswax alternative. Carnauba wax has the perfect consistency for a lip balm. It’s neither too hard nor too soft. It’s a natural wax derived from the leaves of the carnauba palm and is revered for its hypoallergenic and skin-soothing properties.
All Natural Ingredients
The goal of making homemade skin care is to ensure that the products you are putting on your skin are natural and safe. For this recipe, I chose to use the following, all-natural ingredients.
Rose Infused Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is a wonderful ingredient that closely resembles the natural oils in our skin. By infusing it with roses, we add a hint of floral aroma that evokes a sense of calm and tranquility. This oil is excellent at keeping your lips moisturized and soft, providing a much-needed shield against the chill of winter.
Cocoa Butter Wafers
Cocoa Butter is used for its hydrating and nourishing properties. It’s also very beneficial in improving overall skin health. Cocoa butter helps to create a protective barrier over the skin which locks in moisture. This is particularly beneficial for your lips during winter, preventing them from drying out.
Mango Butter
Mango Butter is known for its moisturizing benefits. It’s rich in essential fatty acids, nutrients that are vital for healthy skin. The creamy consistency helps the lip balm glide over your skin. It also contributes to the protection against the drying effects of winter.
Vanilla Bean Powder
Vanilla Bean Powder adds just a hint of flavor and sweetness that you will love. Its cozy aroma is also quite comforting during the cold winter months.
Rose Clay and Beetroot Powder
These ingredients are used to add a beautiful hue to your lip balm, making it visually appealing as well as effective. These natural colorants are safe to use and give a subtle flush of color to your lips.
Once you’ve got your ingredients, let’s make the homemade lip balm!

Making your Homemade Lip Balm
There are a few simple steps that you need to follow to make your own homemade lip balm. If you are infusing the jojoba oil with rose, you will want to plan and make your infusion 4-6 weeks before making the lip balms. Unless you are using magic butter, then it’s a couple of hours.
When you are ready to make the lip balms, you will have to melt the carnauba wax. When working with carnauba wax, the melting point on the double boiler is very high compared to beeswax. We’re talking 180-185 degrees F. I recommend heating and melting the carnauba wax first before adding the other oils and cacao wafers so you don’t burn the other oils.
Once everything is melted together, carefully pour it into the lip balm containers. Just a heads up the mixture will be a little hot so be careful! Let the lip balms cool overnight or in the fridge before using and storing.

How to Store Your Homemade Lip Balm
After you’ve made your homemade lip balm, you will have to store it correctly to ensure it’s freshness and effectiveness. Once you have your homemade lip balms in the container, store them in a cool dark place. This will ensure they don’t melt or become exposed to the elements and can be used for a long time!
